We have the opportunity for a live/work exchange on our farm, an arrangement that is coordinated through the WWOOF organization (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms). We are a small organic family farmstead and micro-dairy specializing in “Farmaceutical-grade” skincare, raw grass-fed goat milk dairy products, pastured poultry, pork, and eggs. As our business grows, we are looking for a few reliable, trustworthy, able-bodied individuals to grow with us.
We have three internship spots to fill – one specializing in Skincare Production and Marketing, one in Dairy Products (cheese, kefir, yogurt), and another in General Farm Management. This is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in goat milking, cheese-making, marketing, skincare production, and general farm management. Below are the descriptions of each position, and the specific skills one can expect to gain, although there will be some overlap in duties.
These are not paid positions, although there may be the opportunity for a part-time paid position following completion of the internship.
Requirements: Ideal candidates can devote between 8 and 20 hours a week for a period of at least 2 months and must provide their own transportation. Scheduling is flexible, although weekdays are preferred. These positions involve physical, sometimes rigorous, outdoor labor. Interns must be able to lift 50 lbs, bend, stretch, stand for extended periods of time, climbstairs, reach, twist, sit, walk, and/or run. Experience with livestock, dairy, and/or horticulture preferred.

Farm Management Internship This position will focus on managing the farm, which starts with the soil and grass and extends all the way up to goat milking, livestock husbandry, and a farm stand. The successful intern can expect to gain hands on experience with:
Milking goats (using a bucket milker and by hand)
Animal husbandry, including hoof trimming, feed and general care, bottle feeding babies, raking stalls and coops, breeding, and administering supplements and medical treatments
Pasture rotation and management, including irrigation, seeding, and soil health
General farm maintenance – repairing gates and fences, managing compost, pruning fruit trees, seeding and mulching pasture, basic carpentry, etc.
Managing a farm budget – understanding costs, pricing, direct-to-consumer and wholesale accounts.
The person in this position will be expected to work independently as he/she becomes more proficient in these skills. Additional opportunities include experience attending markets, events, and deliveries.
Skincare Production Internship This position will assist with the production, labeling, packaging, shipping, and marketing of our line of “Farmaceutical-Grade” Skincare products. Interns can expect to gain experience with every aspect of a handmade, natural skincare line, including assisting with:
Formulating handmade skincare for retail and wholesale order.
Managing, fulfilling, and shipping online orders and scheduling delivery of local orders.
Growing and maintaining herbs and other plants used as ingredients
Stocking supplies and inventory
The person in this position will be expected to work independently as he/she becomes more proficient in these skills. Additional opportunities include experience attending markets, events, and deliveries, as well as assisting with farm activities like goat milking.
Artisan Milk and Cheese Production Internship This position will assist with the production, labeling, packaging, delivery, sales, and marketing of our “Feta for Fido” products. This line consists of high-end organic, raw goat milk treats and supplements, including raw milk, kefir/fermented milk, yogurt, chèvre/goat cheese, feta, and other cheeses. Interns can expect to gain experience with every aspect of farmstead milk and cheese production, including:
Making soft and aged cheeses, yogurt, and kefir
Marketing and sales
Sanitation and cleanliness involved in artisan food production
Packaging, labeling, and distribution; Managing and fulfilling direct-to-consumer and wholesale orders
The person in this position will be expected to work independently as he/she becomes more proficient in these skills. Additional opportunities include experience attending markets, events, and deliveries, as well as assisting with other farm activities.
Part-Time Paid Positions
Sunny Cabana Farms is looking to hire a Weekend Morning Milker, with the possibility of more shifts becoming available. Experience with milking goats is a plus, and experience with livestock is a must. We will provide training and supervision to ensure that quality-control standards are met, including low Coliform Counts and Standard Plate Counts. Compensation is negotiable and based on experience.
We use a bucket milker to milk between 7-10 goats, two at a time. This position requires a consistent 1-2 hour commitment on Saturday and Sunday mornings, beginning no later than 10 AM. The qualified candidate is:
Conscientious of cleanliness and sanitation
Comfortable handling goats and milking equipment
Organized and capable of following detailed instruction
Able to lift 50+ pounds, bend, stretch, stand for extended periods of time, climb stairs, reach, twist, sit, walk, and/or run
Able to adapt to changes in routine
Capable of working independently and meeting quality control standards
