Who we are.
Hi! I'm Kayla, and this is my husband Aaron. We are two suburbanite academics, a flock of pastured laying hens, a herd of dairy goats, two dogs, some pigs, and a dragon-slayer (he's five). We moved to the "country" of Southern California in an attempt to let animals be animals, kids be kids, and food be food.
We firmly believe that your body (and skin) is best treated holistically, from the inside out. Our philosophies on food and skincare are one in the same. Keep it clean and pure.
We say a lot about how we approach growing food under the "How We Farm" sections of this site. Like the food grown here, the skincare we produce at Sunny Cabana Farms is made of the purest and highest quality, sustainable, organic ingredients and packaged in reusable or biodegradable materials.
When we first arrived at the farm, I started making products for our family, using the botanicals we were already growing (mint, chamomile, comfrey, dandelion...). We've always pursued a healthy lifestyle, but the birth of our son was the impetus down a rabbit hole of research into what we fed our bodies, inside and out. I recognized that staying hydrated and eating clean whole foods could make a world of difference in your body's largest organ; your skin. This belief led to the creation of some all-natural, toxin-free skincare products designed to help gently support and maintain balanced skin, defending and protecting against the external environment. I'm a cosmetic/skincare junky, and so the creation of my line of "Farmaceutical-Grade" Skincare was a natural extension of this passion. Gradually I began formulating natural yet effective replacements for the synthetic crap in our medicine cabinets. I carefully chose the best ingredients Earth has to offer, continuing to grow many of them myself on our farm. These include certified organic ingredients and absolutely no parabens, petroleum, formaldehyde, aluminum, bpa and phthalate. Following the encouragement of friends and family who loved the results they were seeing after using my soaps and lotions, I decided to grow the business and make these products available to a wider consumer-base.
What do we mean by "Farmaceutical-Grade"?
- It means we make pure, effective products based on the best ingredients nature has to offer, including those that we produce ourselves.
- It also means that these products are tested “tried and true” to stand up to a hard day’s work in the SoCal heat and still keep you looking glam. I happen to believe that hard work doesn’t have to come at the expense of feeling like a lady. ;)
- Finally, it represents my belief that beauty starts from the inside out. Skincare shouldn’t be a Band-Aid, but should be part of a holistic approach to self-care. What you put in your body is as important as what you put on it. Our products are meant to support and maintain a healthy complexion, as well as provide a little cosseting. They are gentle, and unlike some products aimed at “fixing” your face, ours won’t wreak havoc on your skin.
Every decision I make about my line of skincare, from packaging to ingredients to formula, starts with three basic questions: (1) Does it work? (does it effectively do what we want it to do); (2) Do I feel comfortable with my family using it? (is it safe); (3) Is it good for the planet? (is it socially and environmentally responsible).
